Public Awareness

The Safe Sleep Coalition was initiated by the Missouri Department of Social Services (DSS), Children’s Division (CD) in Winter 2016 to exclusively focus on safe sleep for infants. As of August 2021, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Office of Childhood, began overseeing the management of the Safe Sleep Coalition. The primary goal of the Coalition is to substantially reduce and eliminate injuries and deaths as a result of unsafe sleep environments and practices in Missouri through increased education, awareness, practice and training. Public awareness and consistent messaging about safe sleep practices are the key to increased safe sleep education for the general public.
